How much will it cost to fix my clock?
Clock repairs vary greatly in cost depending on the type
of clock and the amount of repair needed.
Our minimum charge for repair is $20
Most clock service (oil and adjust) costs around $89.
Serious repair and rebuilds start at $200. This type
of repair involves taking the clock movement apart. Cleaning
the parts in an ultrasonic cleaner. Polishing all the
clock pivots and installing any needed bushings.
Work of this caliber is guaranteed to be free from defects
in craftsmeship for a period of one year.
My clock is just wound too tight. How can
I fix this problem?
A clock that is wound tight is a clock at full power.
The tightness of the spring is not the problem. The clock
won't run because of problems in the movement. Clocks
need to be oiled every 3 to 5 years. Most people neglect
the sevice of the clock and the movement becomes dirty
and dry. The parts inside can seize up and just plain
wear out. I like to compare clocks to automobiles. If
you drive your car for 10 years without changing the oil,
the engine will wear out.
If your car won't start , check the gas in the tank.
If your clock won't run, check to make sure the clock
spring is wound tight. If the clock is wound tight or
the gas tank is full , the problem is elsewhere in the
engine/movement. A fully wound spring is like a full tank
of gas.
Can I oil my clock with a spray lubricant
like W D - 40 ?
No competent clockmaker would suggest this action. Spraying
lubricant all over your clock movement has short term
benefits and long term problems. These improper lubricants
dry to a gummy residue that collects dirt all over your
clock movement and causes the movement to gum up and stop.
